My daily devotional gave me pause - am I a friend or a brother? Which are you?

Bible Study Verse
Proverbs 17:17
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. (NIV)

Thoughts
The reports were that the river was full of fish if we could simply carve out enough time to get there.  Well, I don't really remember the number of fish we caught or much about that trip, other than one aspect.

I must've been about 8, which means my brothers would have been about 14 and 16.  My oldest brother decided to cross the river to get to the other side as we were working our way to a new spot.  Suddenly he got caught up in the current which swept him off his feet.  He was headed downstream in a hurry.

My other brother, who was also in the river crossing, simply reached down into the cold spring runoff and grabbed Craig by the back of his coat collar and hoisted him up and out - no worries.  To this day, it's a family joke, but that's because Craig's still here and he didn't get swept under.  His brother pulled him out.

Action
Unfortunately, we aren't always smart enough to avoid the holes in the river or measure how strong the current is.  But, that's when it's good to have a brother or sister in Christ along.  They were designed to walk this life's journey with us - side by side - to help and assist.

If you have a brother or sister in Christ like this, thank God today for that person.  If you don't have a brother or sister in Christ to walk by your side, pray that God would bring someone to you.  We need their encouragement, fellowship, and friendship - it's God's design.
